BioShock 2 for PC, X360 and PS3 is an extensive first-person action game featuring elements of different genres. It is a sequel to the bestselling BioShock released in 2007, Several years after the events shown in the original game, the player visits the underwater city of Rapture again. The mysterious metropolis was supposed to become a utopian paradise for scientists tired of limitations brought by fear or morality. The original game gave an insight into what Rapture actually did turn into. This time, the player takes on the role of the first Big Daddy prototype in order to face Rapture's new leader.

Mechanics

Assuming the role of a powerful Big Daddy, the player gains access to all the specific skills he has. The player's basic weapons are a huge drill and a rivet gun - a powerful pneumatic cannon. The player makes use of different tonics and plasmids, which appeared first in the original game. These improve certain parameters describing the protagonist and offering new, incredible abilities, allowing the player to set the enemy on fire for example. Different mutations of this kind can be upgraded, increasing their effectiveness. In contrast to the original game, the player is allowed to use plasmids and firearms simultaneously, which constitutes a significant change. A flashlight attached to the protagonist's helm is a useful addition, for it activates automatically several times during the playthrough.

Expansion

August 31, 2010

RPG

An official DLC that expands the plot of the 2010’s BioShock 2 by 2K Games. The action of the expansion takes place at the same time as the events of the original. In Minerva’s Den, we assume the role of a completely new character, who joined forces with the original’s Brigid Tenenbaum, and visit previously unknown locations in the underwater city of Rapture, uncovering mysteries of its new governor and filling up some missing pieces of the plot of BioShock 2. The add-on features new kinds of weapons and plasmids as well as improved flying robots that now are now powerfully armed. We also encounter new enemies, including the previously unused variant of Big Daddy, and six new Little Sisters that can be either rescued or killed. The gameplay is focused solely on the single player mode and doesn’t introduce any novelties to the multiplayer.

  • Emotional Storyline: The narrative exploring themes of parenthood and sacrifice resonated with several players, who appreciated the emotional depth compared to the original game.
  • Visual and Atmospheric Design: While some criticized the visuals, others found the vintage steampunk style and environmental storytelling captivating, maintaining the eerie atmosphere of Rapture.

  • Less Complex Story: Many players felt that the story was not as rich or philosophical as the first game, with a more linear plot that lacked the depth and subtlety of its predecessor.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some reviews mentioned that the gameplay structure became repetitive over time, particularly the mechanics involving the Little Sisters and the quest for ADAM.
