A third-person action RPG, set on an unexplored alien planet. In Empyreal we play as an elite mercenary tasked with exploring the Monolith. They are ruins built by an ancient civilization, hiding automated enemies and many interesting secrets.
Empyreal is an action RPG developed by the British studio Silent Games, which was founded by two former Ubisoft employees – Joseph Rogers and Sally Blake. Additionally, the release of the title was handled by Secret Mode company, which has in its portfolio games such as Still Wakes the Deep and A Little to the Left.
The story in Empyreal takes us to an unexplored planet located in a distant corner of the galaxy. We belong to the members of an expedition, which was tasked with conducting reconnaissance of this new place.
The central point of the planet are the huge ruins called the Monolith. They were built by a lost civilization and hide many secrets and dangers within their interiors.
One of them are hostile machines left behind by the former inhabitants.
In Empyreal we view the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). We come across different characters in the game for whom we perform series of missions and tasks. They push the plot forward, but they are also an opportunity to win specific rewards.
The found loot allows us to customize our character and develop them. Every weapon and armor can be upgraded and modified. In turn, collecting a full set of armor allows us to receive bonuses, which will give us an advantage in battle.
The combat is based on duels, which we can resolve using hand-to-hand techniques or ranged weapons. Regardless, taking on formidable opponents requires mastering the system, which is the only way to win.
Additionally, we can explore the world inside the Monolith. It conceals many secrets and hidden details, which allow to uncover the history of this place.

Empyreal has a great combat system with lots of opportunities to try something new. Hunting for better equipment is exciting, and developing your character is a rewarding feeling. But there's not much else to do, and the shine wears off quickly. This is also a game that demands a good PC, or you might run into problems. It's a great game for fans of varied combat and boss rushes, but not much else.

Some people enjoy the hard slog of grinding away at combat to progress others like to have a bit of challenge but ultimately be able to progress without feeling like they are just locked in a combat Groundhog day. If you enjoy the tough grind then Empyreal may well be right up your alley. If you believe that the easy setting on a game should mean just that and not seemingly be completely ignored when the game starts perhaps give it a miss.

Empyreal is a solid dungeon crawler with a complex and engaging core gameplay loop. It allows the player to build a character that suits their playstyle and a familiar, visible path for progression. Anyone that enjoys 3rd person ARPGs should really pick this one up. It would be a shame to award it anything less than the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.
