Everspace 2 is a sequel to the space shooter with RPG elements from 2017. The player explores the game's world (this time designed by hand) aboard a spaceship, completing quests. Progressing rewards us with better ships and upgrades, letting us face gradually greater challenges.
Everspace 2 is the second installment in a series of space shooters originating from 2017. Unlike the original, which was heavily inspired by roguelikes, the sequel takes place in a world fully designed by hand. It was developed by the independent Rockfish Games, the same studio responsible for its predecessor, its funding provided via Kickstarter.
Everspace 2 is set after the events of the first installment. The main protagonist is one of the space pilots who managed to defeat the sinister Admiral Gorc. As a clone wanted by the authorities, he was forced to assume a false identity and work as a miner for a living. Soon, however, he ends up entangled in a complex intrigue, forcing him to sit in the pilot seat once again.
Everspace 2 makes use of two different perspectives: from the cockpit (FPP) and from behind our ship (TPP). The game features a vast open world. Throughout the game we traverse the depths of space, visit planetary systems, space stations and bases, as well as planet surfaces. The game's driving force are main quests, alongside numerous side missions and optional activities. The player will get to discover various sentient species, make friends (some can even join us as wingmen), find traces of conspiracies, take part in wars between feuding clans and acquire numerous treasures. Exploring space is a dangerous pastime, with some areas being especially deadly. It's worth the risk, however, as experienced pilots can find priceless rewards.
The dangers in question are primarily various enemies. These include drones and enemy spacecraft, such as agile fighters, heavy bombers and giant cruisers. Combat is dynamic, requiring agility and reflexes (instant evasions and quick counter-attacks), perception (as opponents can attack us from all directions) and knowledge of the enemies' strengths and weaknesses (in order to choose the right weaponry).
RPG elements play an important role in the game. Though our initial ship isn't too impressive, over time we can start filling up our hangar with new models, differing in size, appearance and class, which determines their stats and compatible weaponry. Ships can be upgraded and personalized by installing better gear. We must also remember to synergize our ship's subsystems; not every weapon, module or accessory fits the remaining gear or the ship class well. We can also increase our combat potential through perks, unlocked and upgraded by making progress. Unneeded equipment can be sold off at space stations, though the prices fluctuate depending on supply and demand.
Everspace 2 only supports singleplayer.
Everspace 2 runs on the Unreal Engine 4. The game's visuals are of a high quality. The space vistas, detailed ship models and in-combat effects are all especially appealing.
Everspace 2 first debuted on Steam, in early access, on January 18, 2021. It quickly became a bestseller and was met with a very warm reception. Players mostly praised the game's intuitive handling, audiovisuals, the sheer amount of content and good optimization. A sentiment common across many of the positive reviews was that Rockfish Games ironed out all of the first game's flaws, comparing the sequel to the genre's most iconic titles - Freelancer and Freespace.

December frenzy is behind us, so it's time to enter the new year rather quietly. January doesn't hide any firecracker on a global scale, but it's not bad – everyone should find a game or two for themselves this month.
It turns out that optimizing games on Unreal Engine 5 causes such problems for devs that some of them decide to hire studios that specialize in it to help them.

Game Ratings for Everspace 2 Video Game.
COGconnected: 88 / 100 by Mark Steighner
Everspace 2 has a solid narrative, great arcade-style flight and combat mechanics, and an addictive explore, loot, and fight gameplay loop. That was true on the PC and it’s just as true on consoles. Everspace 2 is proof that an unexpected genre mashup like looter/shooter and space combat can play nicely together.
GamingTrend: 95 / 100 by Ron Burke
With fast paced frenetic combat, a story that keeps you guessing, and enough interlocked systems to bring it all together in a way the first game never could, Everspace 2 is the best space game I've played in a very long time. Rockfish reached for the stars, and damn if they didn't catch 'em!
PlayStation Universe: 9 / 10 by John-Paul Jones
It speaks to the level of ambition on display here - not to mention a tolerance for risk - that Everspace 2 essentially jettisons the roguelike mechanics of the first game in favour of a much more open and looter focused shooter and is all the better for it. A superior sequel in every way, Everspace 2 delivers on the premise hinted at in its predecessor with aplomb, even if the story campaign that anchors its super looter shooter beats seems to be little more than window dressing for the other impeccable aspects of its design.
