Being the sixth game featuring Tex Murphy, Tesla Effect, also known as Project Fedora, is a detective-adventure game. The title was developed by the independent studio Big Finish Games composed of the fathers of the franchise – Chris Jones and Aaron Conners.

Plot

The action takes place in the not-too-distant future in post-apocalyptic San Francisco dwelled by both humans and mutants. We assume the role of Tex Murphy – the tired private detective who abuses alcohol. When the game begins, he is broke, once again. This is why he accepts a case. As it turns out, the investigation brings him more trouble than he could expect.

Mechanics

Just like the three previous instalments, the game offers a 3D world with recorded actors. Therefore, it is possible to explore all locations freely, and the plot is uncovered through cut-scenes. As this is a true detective production, we spend most of the time on conducting the investigation, gathering evidence, interrogating witnesses, and solving puzzles. All of this is displayed in a completely new interface fit for today’s standards. The puzzles pose a significant challenge, but those less experienced can use a special hint system.

The plot was a top priority for the creators of Tesla Effect. The series’ veterans will find loads of references to the previous instalments (including the information about the events taking place after the twist ending of Overseer), but the developers made sure that those new to the series will also have fun. The story is non-linear to a large extent. The decisions taken during gameplay influence later events and place the player on one of the separate plot lines.
