Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered is a collection of remastered versions of the fourth, fifth and sixth main installments in the Tomb Raider action-adventure game series, originally released between 1999 and 2003:

  1. Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
  2. Tomb Raider: Chronicles
  3. Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness

This is the second such compilation released by Aspyr Media, after Tomb Raider I-III Remastered from 2024.

Plot

In all of the games from the Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered collection we play the role of a fearless archaeologist – Lara Croft. In Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, the protagonist finds herself in Egypt, where she accidentally awakens the ancient deity – Set. Given that the heroine brings about the vision of the end of the world, from now on her primary goal becomes finding the armor of Horus, an artifact capable of stopping the ancient god.

SteamDeckHQ: 3.5 / 5 by Noah Kupetsky

Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered is a fantastic remaster of some of the classic Tomb Raider titles that makes them as playable as possible. Aspyr's enhancements have made these titles much better looking and easier to enjoy, with great new features like the wonderful photo mode and fly-by camera for cinematic shots. The original games do have some quality-of-life features to make them more playable, but there are still some issues with controls and speed that still keep them feeling more like a slog for newcomers. Still, this is easily the best way to enjoy the games currently, and they can be a ton of fun if you have the patience. They all run especially well on the Steam Deck too. The Last Revelation and Chronicles run better than The Angel of Darkness, but they're all a joy to play on the go with solid battery life and an easy 60 or 90 FPS.

Smash Jump: 7 / 10 by Daniel Leal

Overall, Aspyr has done a really good job of remastering Tomb Raider 4-6. The fact that you can switch between old and new graphics with the flick of a button is a feature I’d like in every remaster of a classic 90s’ game. The feature of saving at any time is also a good addition. It’s almost like having save states. Since these games are old and established, giving the player freedom over how these games are played is a positive feature.

  • Visual Upgrades: The remastered graphics for "Tomb Raider IV" and "Tomb Raider V" received high praise for their stunning visuals and attention to detail, with many textures and models significantly improved.
  • Restored Content: Several reviews highlighted the restoration of previously cut content, including voice lines and new areas, which added depth to the gameplay.
  • Nostalgia Factor: The remaster successfully captured the nostalgia of the original games, with many players expressing joy in revisiting beloved titles.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Features like quicksave and better inventory management were welcomed, making gameplay smoother.

The main cons of the game

  • Inconsistent Quality: While TR4 and TR5 were well-received, AoD was criticized for being incomplete, with many character models not remastered and some textures appearing outdated.
  • Control Issues: Despite improvements, AoD still suffered from clunky controls and awkward movement mechanics, reminiscent of the original game.
  • Bugs and Glitches: Users reported various bugs, including audio issues, graphical glitches, and game-breaking bugs, particularly in AoD.
  • Limited New Content: Some players were disappointed that AoD did not include as much new content as expected, feeling that it was rushed and lacked the polish of the other remasters.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Character Model Updates: Many NPCs in AoD did not receive upgraded models, leading to a jarring visual contrast with remastered characters.
  • Reflections and Lighting Effects: Users noted the absence of certain visual effects, like reflections and improved lighting, which were present in the original game but missing in the remaster.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: Some players expressed a desire for more streamlined gameplay mechanics, such as improved inventory management and options to skip tutorial dialogues.
  • Brightness Settings: A common complaint was the lack of adjustable brightness settings, making some areas of the game too dark to navigate comfortably.
  • New Game+ Features: Users noted the absence of features like New Game+ that would allow players to retain abilities or items from previous playthroughs.

Summary

  • In summary, while the remaster of "Tomb Raider IV-VI" offers significant improvements and nostalgia for fans, "Angel of Darkness" in particular has faced criticism for its incomplete state and lingering issues. Players are hopeful for future patches to address these concerns.
