Valheim is a survival action game with an open world that takes us to a fantastic universe inspired by Nordic mythology. The game was developed by the independent team of Iron Gate Studio and published by Coffee Stain Publishing.

Mechanics

In Valheim we see the action from the third person perspective (TPP). The game starts in the relatively quiet centre of the procedurally generated land. Although we may feel moderately safe there, the area is not very rich in natural resources. We need resources to produce an ever better arsenal and stronger armour, to build various structures like fortresses or posts, and to produce food for our character.

Therefore, over time, we start to move farther and farther from the center; while dense forests, gloomy marshes or even snowy mountain peaks we walk on foot, once we reach the seashore, we have no choice but to build ourselves a boat and go in search of unknown lands. The increasingly courageous exploration involves the need to face increasing threats. Fights with aggressive animals and mythical beasts are dynamic, and during these battles we have to show dexterity and reflexes in order to block enemy blows in time or perform evasions and to launch counterattacks in a flash. We eliminate enemies by making use of cold weapons (such as swords and axes) and ranged weapons (like various bows).

The Digital Fix: 8 / 10 by Dani Cross

It can be hard to rate an early-access title because you have to understand that what you're playing isn't complete yet, regardless of how good or bad it is. However, in its current state, Valheim is already well worth picking up. The future is very bright for this game.

DVS Gaming: 6.5 / 10

Honestly, this game works as intended. It has hiccups as all early-release games do and its main hiccup is the server search/multiplayer aspect of it. Personally, I haven’t had many issues with multiplayer, even on multiple LAN connections. This game has been beautiful, time-consuming, and a lot of fun with my friends. For $20 you can’t go wrong.

  • Boss Fights and Progression: The boss battles are considered epic and rewarding, contributing to a strong sense of progression as players advance through various biomes.
  • Visuals and Audio: While the graphics are described as low-poly, many players find the art style beautiful and atmospheric, complemented by a fantastic soundtrack.
  • Replayability: The game has high replay value, with many players enjoying multiple playthroughs and the ability to play solo or with friends.

The main cons of the game

  • Slow Development and Updates: Many players express frustration over the slow pace of updates and the game still being in early access after several years, leading to feelings of abandonment.
  • Grindiness: The gameplay loop is often described as tedious and grindy, with players needing to spend excessive time gathering resources and crafting, which can detract from enjoyment.
  • Combat Mechanics: Combat is criticized for being clunky, especially in uneven terrain, and for having issues with hit detection and enemy AI behavior.
  • Inventory Management: The inventory system is seen as cumbersome, with limited storage and no options for expanding inventory slots, leading to frustration during gameplay.
  • Balancing and Progression Issues: Players mention that some biomes and enemies can be overly punishing, leading to a frustrating experience rather than a challenging one.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Quality of Life Improvements: Many players feel that the game lacks essential quality of life features, such as better inventory management, sorting options, and a more user-friendly interface.
  • More Diverse Content: Users express a desire for additional quests, lore, and points of interest to encourage exploration and provide more narrative depth.
  • Combat Enhancements: Suggestions include improving the combat system, making mechanics like parrying independent of equipment, and introducing more varied enemy types.
  • Character Progression: Players would like to see more character customization options and skill trees to allow for more personalized playstyles.
  • Optimization: Some reviews point out performance issues, especially in newer biomes, and a need for better optimization to enhance gameplay on modern hardware.

Summary

  • Overall, while Valheim is celebrated for its immersive world, building mechanics, and engaging gameplay, it faces criticism for its slow development pace, grindiness, and certain gameplay mechanics that could benefit from refinement.
