Minecraft Meets Civilization: Dawnfolk Sells 10,000 Copies
Dawnfolk is like if Minecraft and Civilization had a baby. In five days, this indie strategy city-builder from a solo-developer sold 10,000 copies on Steam.

Indie strategy city builder roguelite, Dawnfolk, has hit 10,000 copies sold in five days since releasing on Steam on February 13th. The developer, Darenn Keller, shared the milestone on social media this morning. Keller is a former designer from Ubisoft who broke off to create their passion project, resulting in Dawnfolk. It is always exciting to see an independent, solo-developer’s passion project find an audience.
Indie roguelite city-builder, Dawnfolk, hits a major sales milestone
In Dawnfolk, you play as the ruler of a mysterious fantasy world. Rebuild years after “titanic obsidian monoliths rained down from the sky” per Dawnfolk’s Steam page. After finding a helpful fiery being called “Lueur” that can light up the darkness spreading from the monoliths, it’s up to you to rebuild your realm and dissipate the darkness. The choices you make will determine the fate of all inhabitants.
Explore a grid of tiles that make up your realm and the surrounding landscapes. Face dangers and disasters and decide how to handle them. Will you help the wandering nomads in the desert or save the miners after the mine collapses? Or will you let them fend for themselves as you hoard enough resources to survive? Gathering resources is not an automated task. The amount of resources you receive is determined by how well you perform in simple mini-games. Dawnfolk blends a casual, patient city-building experience with important decisions and thoughtful strategy.
Dawnfolk is designed to be accessible. Yesterday’s update added a fan-requested ability to play the game with a mouse. But beyond that, players are not expected to have endless hours to learn how the game works and build a massive civilization. Via the game’s Steam page: “Not everyone has time to invest hundreds of hours into learning how to play a grand strategy game. You can dive right in and start building your settlement immediately, going from a handful of tents to a big city in less than an hour.”
While the number of user reviews on Steam is still small, at only 186 at the time of writing this, Dawnfolk has a 94% positive score. Keller, in the description under the official launch trailer, says “If Minecraft and Civilization had a baby, this would be it.” This is not a review of Dawnfolk nor was I contacted at all by the developer or the publisher. This game just looks cool and apparently ten thousand other people think so too. Dawnfolk is available now on PC via Steam and is “a perfect fit” for Steam Deck. There is also an ongoing introductory offer of 15% off the $14.99 price, making it currently only $12.74, but only for the next 40 hours.
