Rumors suggest an Elden Ring movie is in the works at A24
Rumors are circulating about a film adaptation of FromSoftware's Elden Ring in the works at A24, with Alex Garland rumored to be the director.

Today, rumors are circulating about an Elden Ring movie in the works at A24. In a now removed article on Nexus Point News, the site claimed to have information suggesting Alex Garland would be set to direct the film. Garland has worked on movies such as last year’s Civil War, and he has previously found critical acclaim directing movies like Ex Machina and Annihilation, as well as writing movies like 28 Days Later. He has also worked on a few video games including 2013’s DmC: Devil May Cry and 2010’s Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, both developed by Ninja Theory.
An Elden Ring movie could be in the works at A24, according to rumors
The success of Elden Ring launched developer FromSoftware into a level of notoriety they had not reached before. Previous games like the Dark Souls series and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice received universal acclaim but had not found as large an audience as Elden Ring. It won Game of the Year at the Game Awards in 2022 and went on to be nominated again in 2024 with Shadow of the Erdtree earning the first Game of the Year nomination for a DLC. Elden Ring Nightreign, a cooperative multiplayer spinoff, is planned to launch later this month.
A24, the studio supposedly helping put this movie together, has worked with Garland on several of his previous films. They are also known for being involved in the production of two best picture winners, Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Overall, this seems like it could be a perfect fit for the adaptation of this iconic FromSoftware franchise. But it’s likely years away from reaching a point where we can see a trailer or learn much about it.
Video game movies have been a popular topic lately. The recent success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 only lends more confidence to the fact that a film adaptation was greenlit months ahead of the game’s launch. The Split Fiction movie had some casting rumors recently, suggesting that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney could be playing one of the game’s two protagonists. All of this as season two of The Last of Us tv series is premiering.
Video games are a tricky medium to adapt to film. By their very nature, video games offer the viewer more control and immersion than movies ever could. Ever since the announcement of the Split Fiction movie, I’ve wondered about how it will work, because reviews tend to agree that the highlight from that game was the gameplay, not necessarily the story. That’s the one thing that can’t be adapted. Regarding this Elden Ring movie, however, given Garland’s experience writing for video games, it could be just what the movie needs.
