Is it worth choosing the Bladesinging subclass?
- The primary assumption of the described subclass is that your Wizard can also become a Fighter using swords and similar types of weapons. This will allow you to have a character who can handle various types of situations.
- The recommended races to play as a Bladesinging character are Githyanki, Wood Elf, and Half-Orc.
Most important features of the subclass
- The unique resource of the Bladesinging subclass is Bladesong Power. By default, you have 2 uses. Additional ones can be unlocked at levels 5 and 9. To renew Bladesong Power, you need to take a long rest (a short rest is insufficient).
- The most important unique (and free) ability is Bladesong, which mainly allows you to gain proficiency bonuses to armor class and movement speed. It also improves Acrobatics and grants you proficiency in Constitution saving throws. The active Bladesong can be ended with a special action called Bladesong Climax, which allows your Wizard to perform healing and simultaneously deal damage to opponents.
- It's worth noting that Bladesong has limitations. You must be equipped with a Dagger, Longsword, Rapier (the recommended starting weapon), Scimitar, Shortsword or Sickle. You also have to wear light armor. The Bonus Feat Training in War and Song will allow you to gain proficiency for the listed equipment categories.
- At level 10, a Bladesinging character can unlock Song of Defence - it allows them to use a spell slot to subtract 5 damage points per spell slot.
How to play as a Bladesinging Wizard?
- The most important abilities for the Bladesinging subclass are Intelligence (to increase the effectiveness of spells and Bladesong) and Constitution (e.g. for the Haste spell).
- After starting a fight, you should focus on increasing the armor class of your mage - spells and especially Bladesong will serve this purpose. This will allow you to safely place this character on the frontline and move them around a lot. Also take care of the right moment to use Bladesong Climax, to gain as much as possible from weakening enemies and healing wounds.
- Recommended spells to use when playing as a Bladesinging Wizard include Magic Missile, Mage Armor (extra defense against attacks), Misty Step (armor and movement), and the previously mentioned Haste or Glyph of Warding. It's best to focus on spells up to level 3.
